The need to measure and control the operation of machinery is an inherent part of process control and automation. Users needs to regulate, supervise and monitor the output of their plant’s equipment to ensure proper operation and efficiency. All these systems use analogue field measurements which are carried via electronic signals back to a data acquisition or control device, where the signals are converted in to digital signals (digitized) which a microcontroller or computer can process and either take appropriate action or convert data in to useful information for an operational employee to view. Signal conditioning is exactly as the term states – conditioning analogue signals to ensure their integrity from field side sensor back to the data acquisition system or control room. Because this information is communicated via electronic signals there is the potential for external noise, transients, EMI and other external factors to take effect, allowing the data received at the end point to vary from that being transmitted at the field side; clearly this could be detrimental to plant operation, including efficiency and more importantly safety.
Dataforth’s range of signal conditioners prepare analogue signals for digitization, manipulating the signal ready for the next stage of processing. Further to ensuring the signals are more resilient to external factors such as noise, our modules also amplify or provide excitation for effective measurement of specific signals such as thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, strain gauges and so on. Our range of signal conditioning modules are available in a number of industry standard formats explained below.
5B Signal Conditioning Modules
Dataforth SCM5B signal conditioning modules provides a single channel of isolated analogue input or output. Analogue inputs include voltage and current in narrow and wide bandwidths, thermocouple, RTD, accelerometer, potentiometer, strain gage, frequency, and 2-wire transmitter. Input modules interface to all types of external sensors, then filter, isolate, amplify, and convert the input signals to high-level analogue voltage output. Output modules accept high-level analogue voltage signals from a host system, then buffer, isolate, and amplify them before providing process current or voltage output to field devices. Back panels and power supplies are also available for Dataforth’s SCM5B signal conditioners. Click here for more information.
7B Signal Conditioning Modules
Dataforth SCM7B process control signal conditioning modules provides a single channel of isolated analogue input or output. Input modules accept analogue voltage or current signals from all types of field sensors and sources; they filter, isolate, amplify, linearize, and convert the input signals to high-level analogue outputs for use in process control systems. Output modules accept high-level analogue voltage signals from a process control system, then buffer, isolate, filter, and amplify them before providing current or voltage output to field devices. All SCM7B signal conditioner modules are CSA C/US certified and CE and ATEX compliant. Click here for more information.
8B Signal Conditioning Modules
Dataforth 8B signal conditioning modules provides a single channel of isolated analogue input or output. Analogue inputs include voltage, current, temperature, position, frequency, and strain measuring devices. Input modules interface to all types of external sensors, then filter, isolate, amplify, and convert the input signals to high-level analogue voltage output. Output modules accept high-level analogue voltage signals from a host system, then buffer, isolate, and amplify them before providing process current or voltage output to field devices. 8B Signal Conditioners are house in a package 1/5th the size of competing products which make them ideal for embedded applications. Back panels and power supplies are also available for Dataforth’s 8B signal conditioners. Click here for more information.
DCSA DIN-mount Signal Conditioning Modules
Each Instrument-Class DSCA module provides a single channel of isolated analogue input or output. Input modules accept analogue voltage or current signals from all types of field sensors and sources and filter, isolate, amplify, linearize, and convert these input signals to high-level analogue outputs suitable for use in data acquisition, test and measurement, and control system applications. Output modules accept high-level analogue voltage signals from a system, then buffer, isolate, filter, and amplify them before providing a current or voltage output to a field device.
