The Client
In today’s modern era, ensuring road safety hinges significantly on advanced technological solutions, including cutting-edge traffic management systems, intelligent traffic signals, and automated traffic enforcement systems. These innovations play a pivotal role in enhancing both the safety and efficiency of driving experiences. Among them, automated traffic enforcement systems emerge as critical tools in monitoring and curbing traffic violations, thereby mitigating hazardous driving behaviours. They have become integral components of many countries’ strategies to bolster traffic safety.
According to the World Health Organization’s 2022 statistics, road accidents resulted in over 1.3 million fatalities and approximately 50 million injuries worldwide. The adoption of automated traffic enforcement systems has demonstrated a notable reduction in both fatalities and injuries stemming from traffic incidents. Moreover, these systems offer the added advantage of relieving the burden on law enforcement agencies, leading to safer roadways and more streamlined operations. By optimising traffic enforcement through technology, we pave the way for safer roads and more efficient traffic management practices.
The transportation department of a cross-continental country, required a seamless integration of an industrial computer into their traffic enforcement infrastructure. It was to leverage real-time road captures, to facilitate swift detection of violations and issuance of tickets.
The Demands of The Application
In modern traffic enforcement systems, efficient surveillance of violations like running red lights, speeding, and incorrect lane usage is crucial. These systems rely on specific functionalities such as photography, video recording, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). At the heart of these operations lies an edge computer, tasked not only with receiving real-time images from IP cameras but also conducting on-the-edge analysis. Thus, it necessitated high performance and GPU computing capabilities.
For seamless integration into the traffic ecosystem, this edge computer required high-speed LAN ports and Power over Ethernet (PoE) to connect to sensors and IP cameras positioned along the roads. These features would enable the reception of real-time captured image data, facilitating swift analysis and response. Subsequently, the processed data was to be transmitted to the traffic control centre for remote surveillance and management.
To withstand the rigours of outdoor installation, the systems were required to exhibit robustness and durability with positioned along roads, meaning they are also exposed to extreme temperatures and harsh weather conditions, including lightning. Therefore, ensuring continuous 24/7 operation in such environments was imperative for maintaining traffic safety standards.
By leveraging high-performance industrial computers equipped with robust connectivity and durability, traffic enforcement systems can effectively monitor and manage road safety, contributing to smoother traffic flow and reduced accidents on the roads.
