Computers for EV Charging Stations
As the EV market is expected to grow by 35% in 2023 engineers and software developers are working against the clock to roll out reliable systems to meet the growing demands for EV charging stations.
Working with infrastructure in order to maintain a safe and steady flow of electricity and to calculate costs, internal teams to monitor system performance, and the general public via an intuitive user interface, embedded systems used within electric vehicle charging stations have quite a task in hand.
We Supply Charging Station Computers, Peripherals & Screens
We've already helped with dozens of automotive, EV and kiosk projects and are ready and able to help you with yours.
Projected Numbers of EV Charging Stations
As you're no doubt aware, the growth in popularity presents an exciting opportunity for our markets. By 2030 it is forecast that there will be 40 million charging stations installed globally.
Internally at Assured Systems we've been working on some exciting projects in this field, and are in a prime position to supply specific computer components to help with the maintenance of existing EV stations and to allow engineers to create new ones.
Panel PC Vs Embedded Box PC with a Touchscreen Monitor
Panel PCs are a great option when an enclosed self-contained unit is needed for simplicity. By having one device, there are less cables, only one power adapter and less to 'go wrong', however, if something does go wrong, the whole unit becomes faulty. With security considerations Panel PCs for an EV charging station application may only be suitable for systems that will be available in secure areas - such as private car parks or garages. Panel PCs also typically have less connectivity for sensors (which may be a consideration).
A configuration involving a separate touchscreen monitor can mitigate some of the risk and component replacement costs. Here a ruggedised monitor is built into the unit, with an embedded computer securely tucked out of the way, connected with sensors and networking for non-customer facing tasks (such as device maintenance and monitoring). Some consideration is needed with the design of the system to allow for cable channelling, but enhanced and customisable connectivity is likely to allow for additional security sensors and cameras to also be worked into the charging station.
Some EV charging stations may also justify the need for two systems to be worked into the chassis - one to monitor core functionality and security, and the other to provide the end-user platform. This would normally add costs, but it means that any fault with either system could be reported back to the maintenance teams, providing some simple redundancy.
Considerations for any Configuration
Weatherproof features are going to be top of the list, even indoor units are likely to get wet through mishap (car valet or similar).
Dustproof qualities will also play a key role, again even in great conditions such as an indoor garage, an element of grit and dirt is likely at some point to come into play. In outdoor spaces, such as near beaches it's even more of a consideration. If the casing of the EV charging unit can't protect fully then measures can be taken with the internal components.
Ruggedization and general protection from vibrations and 'bumps' will play a big role. System storage must account for this - using low profile and solid-state storage is a must.
Airflow and accounting for a wide operating temperature will play a role in system upkeep - choosing between fanless and fanned systems have pros and cons, and need to work hand-in-hand with the case/chassis design of the EV station. The stations are likely to be used in both freezing and hot temperatures and must account for seasonality.
Further Considerations
Low power consumption will help to keep components running more efficiently and help to extend shelf-life, alongside this, your clients may be looking for the greenest possible overall solution and operating efficiencies may help to win contracts/tenders.
High brightness displays with crisp screen resolutions will help end-users interact with the user interface even when reflection of the sun or shadows cause issues.
Finally - rollout. An often overlooked factor when it comes to launching embedded systems is how similar are the devices in each system that gets produced. For efficient rollout, you need the first and last systems to be as identical as possible.
With all of the above in mind (and other factors that are specific to your own application), choosing components requires experience…
